Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a reverse application of natural osmosis, relying on two core mechanisms: selective interception of semipermeable membranes and high-pressure driving:

Basic natural osmosis: When a semipermeable membrane separates pure water and salt water, water molecules spontaneously flow from the low-concentration pure water side to the high-concentration salt water side until concentration balance is achieved. The driving force of this process is osmotic pressure.

Reverse osmosis separation: Industrial RO equipment applies pressure far higher than osmotic pressure (1-8MPa) to the raw water (high-concentration solution) side via a high-pressure pump, forcing water molecules to pass through the semipermeable membrane in reverse.

Membrane interception effect: The pore size of reverse osmosis membrane is only 0.0001μm (0.1 nanometers), allowing only water molecules to pass through. It can intercept 97%-99.7% of dissolved salts, colloids, bacteria, viruses and heavy metal ions, realizing efficient separation of water and impurities.
